چکیده

The Muskat problem models the dynamics of the interface between two incompressible immiscible fluids with different constant densities. In this work we prove three results. First we prove an L(R) maximum principle, in the form of a new “log” conservation law (3) which is satisfied by the equation (1) for the interface. Our second result is a proof of global existence of Lipschitz continuous solutions for initial data that satisfy ‖f0‖L∞ < ∞ and ‖∂xf0‖L∞ < 1. We take advantage of the fact that the bound ‖∂xf0‖L∞ < 1 is propagated by solutions, which grants strong compactness properties in comparison to the log conservation law. Lastly, we prove a global existence result for unique strong solutions if the initial data is smaller than an explicitly computable constant, for instance ‖f‖1 ≤ 1/5. Previous results of this sort used a small constant ǫ ≪ 1 which was not explicit [5, 16, 7, 12].

Global Existence, Singular Solutions, and Ill-Posedness for the Muskat Problem

The Muskat, or Muskat-Leibenzon, problem describes the evolution of the interface between two immiscible fluids in a porous medium or Hele-Shaw cell under applied pressure gradients or fluid injection/extraction. In contrast to the Hele-Shaw problem (the one-phase version of the Muskat problem), there are few nontrivial exact solutions or analytic results for the Muskat problem. For the stable,...

Porous media: the Muskat problem in 3D

The Muskat problem involves filtration of two incompressible fluids throughout a porous medium. In this paper we shall discuss in 3-D the relevance of the RayleighTaylor condition, and the topology of the initial interface, in order to prove its local existence in Sobolev spaces.

A thin film approximation of the Muskat problem with gravity and capillary forces

Abstract. Existence of nonnegative weak solutions is shown for a thin film approximation of the Muskat problem with gravity and capillary forces taken into account. The model describes the space-time evolution of the heights of the two fluid layers and is a fully coupled system of two fourth order degenerate parabolic equations. The existence proof relies on the fact that this system can be vie...
